About the Falmouth Garden Tour

The Falmouth Memorial Library has declared June 2012 as Garden Month!  In addition to highlighting books and materials from the library’s collection relating to gardens, the library will host a lecture series and end the month with a tour of twelve Falmouth gardens on June 30. Many of these gardens have never been open to the public before. Tickets for the Falmouth Garden Tour go on sale May 1, 2012, with proceeds benefitting the Falmouth Memorial Library and St. Mary’s Garden Club in Falmouth.

The self-guided Falmouth Garden Tour will take place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2012, rain or shine.  The gardens will remain a secret until the morning of the tour.

Highlights:

  • Twelve gardens!
  • Seaside gardens with ocean views!
  • Private gardens from both the Foreside and other Falmouth neighborhoods!
  • A book signing by Judy Paolini of Peaks Island, author of The Inspired Garden, at one of the gardens.
  • A book signing by Lisa Colburn, author of The Maine Garden Journal, at a different garden.

The Garden Tour Committee has been hard at work for the past few months laying the groundwork for and promoting a fabulous event.  The buzz about this event is already tremendous!

2012 Garden Descriptions

Wildflower Fields

A lawn where children once played has become a field of wildflowers that bloom without the use of herbicides or pesticides. The garden’s design ensures three seasons of bloom.

Secret Garden

This seaside garden includes a secret garden surrounded by birches. At the fire pit, a bench affords a place to enjoy the view of Casco Bay.

Farm and Fields

A memorial garden marks the location of the original farmhouse. Apple trees and raised vegetable beds complement a variety of plantings including hosta, astilbe, and ostrich fern.

                    Seabreezes

A profusion of spring perennials greet visitors. A daylily collection delineates the yard from the beach.

Formal Whimsy

A mix of formal gardens, whimsical statues, and hidden areas offers a serene sitting area with an Asian flair.

Sun and Shade

Stroll past the sun gardens and stonework along a grass path through the stone arch to the inner sanctuary. This garden features a woodland stream and a diverse palette of flowers, trees and shrubs.

The Black Garden

From the delicate pine-mulched woodland garden to the sparkling seascaped patio, this property features a wide variety of plants, trees and shrubs including a black garden that blooms all season.

Seaside Sitting Garden

A woodland garden, seaside sitting garden, vegetable garden, parterre garden, and rose garden overlook the ocean. Patios, sitting areas and a fire pit invite visitors to relax.

Oceanside Perennials

With a flowering crabapple tree, ornamental grasses and day lilies welcoming visitors, a stone wall and long, curved perennial garden encompass the patio and back of the house.

Woodland Glade

A woodland “glade garden” with a rare pin oak and old rhododendrons. Hydrangeas, hostas, pachysandras and viburnum add to the woodland feel.

 Sculpture Garden

Sculptures created by a nationally recognized artist are scattered randomly amidst flowering trees and bushes, adding whimsy and interest to its open feel.

Sponsorships

Other local garden tours have offered sponsors an excellent return on their investment, and we are certain the Falmouth Garden Tour will be no different. There are several levels of participation listed below; the Falmouth Garden Tour 2012 sponsorship form reviews what is included with each level so you may choose a level that best fits your needs and budget.  Businesses do not need to be garden-related to be a sponsor.  The “Grab a Bite” level is specifically for restaurants. We anticipate selling at least 500 tickets  to the tour; ticket-holders will spend the day driving around Falmouth.

 Garden Tour Sponsor Levels

o          Rose Sponsor: $1,500—Limited to one exclusive sponsor per industry sector (i.e., one bank, one landscaper, one garden supply store, etc.).

o          Garden Sponsor: $1,000—For businesses that would like the opportunity to talk about their product or service in a featured garden. (Two businesses may share one garden sponsorship but must sign up together. Garden Sponsors are not required to be garden-related businesses. If companies would like to suggest a particular garden in which they have worked and that they would like to sponsor for the tour, we welcome your suggestions but cannot guarantee any recommended garden will be selected.)

o          Platinum Sponsor: $350—Open to all interested sponsors.

o          Gold Sponsor: $100—Open to all interested sponsors.

o          Garden Month Lecture Series Sponsor: $500—Open to all interested sponsors.

o          “Grab a Bite” Sponsor: $100 —Open to restaurants and other shops where people can purchase lunch, dinner, a snack or beverage. Sponsors will be listed in the garden tour guide with their address in the special “Grab a Bite” section.

The Falmouth Garden Tour 2012 sponsorship form details the specific benefits for each level.  Please contact us by email at falmouthgardens2012@gmail.com if you have other suggestions for sponsorship and marketing opportunities related to the tour or if you have questions about the sponsorship levels.   The Garden Tour Committee is interested in partnering with local businesses to make this inaugural event a great success, and we welcome your ideas about ways in which we can work together.
