The History of The Flukes
How it all began…
January 2012: It was a dark and stormy night. Falmouth Memorial Library staff members Andi Jackson-Darling, Ellen Conway and Nina Miller, staffer and French hornist with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, were looking glumly through the windows at the Maine winter at work. Soon their conversation turned to dreams of sun, surf and the sandy beaches of Hawaii. Somebody said the word ukulele….
One month later, on another dark and stormy night, eight people sat in a back room at the library, ukuleles in their eager hands. And so it began.
Presently, The FLUKES (Falmouth Memorial Library Ukulele Society) boast a membership of over 45 musicians. During weekly Wednesday night rehearsals, led by their fearless leader, Nina, they’ve built a repertoire from many different musical genres, practicing, playing and most of all having a lot of fun. So far they have triumphantly performed for audiences throughout several Maine cities and towns, including a debut with the Portland Symphony Orchestra at “Magic of Christmas” and at the Yarmouth Clam Festival on a parade float.
