We’ve had several questions about the trees that were removed at 5 Lunt Road. Our relatively small, triangular lot makes any change very apparent. The trees that were taken down fall into several categories, including those that needed to be removed for a new, Town required sidewalk and for the DEP mandated new storm drain system. Other trees were removed due to safety issues, including compromised root systems. Several trees taken were dying, including the old apple tree near the back lot.
Two years ago, John Bunker from the Maine Heritage Orchard visited and took cuttings from that apple tree. He then grafted 30 trees, which are now 3-4′ tall. Several of these grafted trees will be replanted on the property. The remaining apple trees are available for purchase from the Library. Please contact our staff at 781-2351 for additional information on purchasing an apple tree.
We will be planting over 60 new trees on the Library grounds in accordance with the site plan that was approved by the Planning Board as well as adding a new garden facing Lunt Road. The Shade Garden at the Depot Road entrance will remain untouched.
