Art at the Library

The Falmouth Memorial Library is excited to once again host a Falmouth Artists Showcase from December 6th-February 28th. Please submit an application (linked below) to exhibit your art work in this showcase by Friday, November 15th. Please submit the application to the library or scan it and email it to art@falmouthmemoriallibrary.org. We look forward to exhibiting the many talented Falmouth artists!

Current exhibit: “A Tranquil Life,” featuring artist Missy Asen.

Missy is a native Mainer residing in Falmouth, maintaining studios in Falmouth and Sarasota. She has a BFA from Ohio Wesleyan. Her vibrant acrylic paintings depict the tranquil side of life, allowing one to see beauty in the mundane. Missy has widely exhibited her work in Maine and Florida; her most recent at the Maine Jewish Museum in Portland.

Please enjoy this fabulous show from September 4th-October 30th. Additionally, please join us for a reception for Missy to be held in the lobby of the Library on Wednesday, October 9th from 5-6 pm. All are welcome.

The Art Committee invites Falmouth artists interested in having a show at the Library to be in touch via email (art@falmouthmemoriallibrary.org). Please share a sample of your work with a detailed description of the show you are interested in sharing. Please also let us know if you are willing to share a show with another artist.

Our Permanent Collection

Part of our good fortune in this great new building lies in the details. These are some of the generous donations to our permanent collection:

The Art Committee gratefully accepted the donation of “Seized” by Anne Sheer, acrylic on paper mounted on 1.5 wood panel. This is hanging above the Reference Desk.
The Art Committee gratefully accepted the donation of “Mackworth Morning” by photographer Whitney S. Ball. This is hanging in the Study Room East.
Falmouth artist Jan ter Weele generously donated two paintings to our permanent collection: “Five Boats,” (pictured above) hung in the Children’s Room near the large picture windows, and “Maine,” (pictured below ) which you will find in the middle study room.

Thank you to Bevin Holmberg (mermaidmeadow.com) who kindly donated her artwork titled “Maine Native: to Have and to Hold.”  You can find this colorful piece hanging in the Children’s Room above the board books..

The Library would like to thank artist Arlyss Becker for her donation of “Sunrise to Sunset“, a panoramic art work constructed from handmade paper and acrylic paint on canvas stretched frames. This is hung in the Adult Non-Fiction section.
The Library would like to thank Mabel Gerquest for the generous donation of a trio of Barn Swallows sculpture, now located in the garden to the right of the main entrance. The sculptures were created by Pownal, ME-based artist John Bowdren, who is trained as an illustrator at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and over the past 4 decades has progressively moved from illustration into painting and sculpture to explore color, light, and composition in painting and materials and how they interact in nature and can focus the landscape in sculpture, working primarily in wood and bronze with gold and palladium leaf accents he seeks to simplify shapes into silhouettes in space, with forms like Alewives fish and birds such as Swallows and Swifts and how these can connect the viewer to the kinetic elements of the air and water, environments they and we move through.
Ann Staples Waldron, long time educator and community leader (and avid library patron), donated a Bernard Langlais sculpture, “Siesta”, now hanging in The Odyssey Reading Room.
“Celebrate” by Jac Ouellette. This trio of dynamic metal sculptures was given by an anonymous donor.
